BSOA PERMANENT COLLECTION

Onions Gallery

June 6th 2025 – June 30th 2025

When the Bermuda Society of Arts was established in 1956 one of its stated objectives was to start a permanent collection of work by local artists. The matter was not actively pursued, however, until the Society received a donation of works by Charles Lloyd Tucker.

In 1994, the Governing body, led by then-president Mr. Elmer Midgett III, began to seriously pursue the acquisition of distinctive works of art. A Donation of $4000 from the Bermuda Arts Council, together with other donations from members, permitted the first purchases. Decisions on purchases are made by a member of the governing body and a member of the Society.

Pieces may be chosen from various exhibitions throughout the island, and not necessarily from Society events.

When Commissioner Colin Coxall took up his post in Bermuda and saw the bare, dull walls in his office, he reasoned that if he was going to spend 12-14 hours a day there, he would have to do something to brighten them up. As an art lover, his office in London featured a myriad of paintings and he wanted the same for his office in Bermuda.

By mutual agreement with the Bermuda Society of Arts, which had no permanent home for its contemporary collection, it was agreed to transfer it to Commissioner Coxall’s office for the duration of his contract.

The Commissioner kindly agreed that anyone wishing to view the collection could do so. Now that Commissioner Coxall has left the island, the collection was returned to the Society’s gallery at City Hall.
