The Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) is pleased to announce that through fundraising
efforts, student Layla WIlliams has been awarded the 2023 BSoA Bursary Award in the
amount of $5,000. Layla is currently a Sophomore at Emerson College, studying Visual Media Arts
Production (Filmmaking). She plans to work on film sets, write scripts, direct and edit movies. Emerson
College has a semester long program to intern in Los Angeles and Layla is looking forward to that
experience which will help with networking and further experience in the industry.

Some 7 aspiring artists applied for the bursary by submitting portfolios of their work. The
candidates were short-listed by members of the BSoA’s bursary selection committee –
Former BSoA co-president and Dr. Edwin Smith and former BSoA board member Catherine
Hay. Dr. Smith announced “We are proud to nominate Layla Williams as the recipient of the 2023 Bursary
Award. She is a thoughtful, talented, and ambitious artist who has taken advantage of opportunities to
develop her expertise and has done well. We have every confidence that Layla will continue to excel in
her studies and make a significant impact in the field of media arts.” Mrs. Hay noted that “Layla had a
very impressive application and I support awarding it to her.”

The high quality of the submissions made for a difficult task in deciding who would receive
the final award. The finalists will have the opportunity to have a free show of their work at
the Bermuda Society of Arts to showcase their outstanding portfolios. Congratulations to
other entrants who did not make it this year. We are excited to see their successes in the
arts. The gallery director of BSoA, Nzingha Ming added that “the $5,000 bursary, awarded annually by
the BSoA, is designed to provide financial aid to a Bermudian student interested in furthering their post-
secondary education in fine arts and/or design. The recipient should be registered at an accredited
college or university for either undergraduate or post-graduate studies”

The BSOA, also known as the People’s Gallery, is the island’s oldest arts organization, celebrating 71
years in 2023. It is hoped that through continued support and generous sponsorship the society will be
able to increase this bursary and help more talented Bermudian artists fulfill their dreams.
A very special thank you to this year’s sponsor/donor the IAS Foundation
